The Superior Cold Weather Floor Coating Solution
If you’ve been researching floor coatings, you’ve probably run across information stating that floor coatings shouldn’t be applied below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This is largely true, particularly of epoxy floor coatings. While epoxy is a tried and true floor coating solution that has been used for decades, there are many limitations that have remained over the years. One of the most notable is installation temperature.
Virtually all epoxies on the market recommend both the air temperature and the slab temperature to be 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of at least 12 hours after application. While this may be possible in interior settings where the temperature is controlled, this simply isn’t realistic for most garages in the Chicagoland area where temperatures frequently dip into the single digits.
While some flooring companies may convince you that you’ll need to wait until Spring for your garage flooring project, White Rabbit has a year round solution for your garage flooring needs! Unlike most floor coating contractors in the Chicagoland area that rely on epoxy resins, we install an industry leading, industrial strength polyurea floor coating.
What is Polyurea?
Polyurea is a product with a wide range of uses–but is most commonly used as a protective coating solutions. Originally developed in 1959, polyurea has been used in everything from protective coatings in industrial settings, to truck beds, to boat hulls, and even clothing!
Polyurea, while not developed specifically as a floor coating product, was discovered to have exceptional floor protection characteristics. With tensile strengths that can break concrete and up to 500% elasticity, polyurea floor coatings provide similar bonding characteristics as epoxy to concrete, with vastly superior abrasion and chemical resistance and elasticity.
Additionally, and as we touched on above, polyurea also has more tolerance to adverse weather conditions–particularly temperature. Epoxy, polyurethane, industrial paints, and other commonly used floor coating products, generally require temperatures to be 50 degrees or above. White Rabbit’s polyurea solution, however, can be applied in temperatures as low as zero degrees–making it an ideal solution for the harsh winter weather in the Chicago area.
Don’t let the weather or companies with inferior products dictate your installation schedule. White Rabbit’s polyurea product can accommodate your needs any time of the year.
Why Haven’t You Heard of Polyurea?
If you haven’t heard of polyurea, it is likely because polyurea is not as visible to in today’s retail market place. While most big box stores sell low quality DIY epoxy floor coating systems, polyurea coating systems require more skill and expertise to install, making them a popular solution with floor coating professionals, but a poor choice for homeowners attempting to coat floors themselves.
The advanced nature of this coating, however, is what makes it superior to other floor coating solutions on the market–allowing us to provide an industry-leading lifetime warranty on all interior residential applications.
