Your PC - Keep It Running Smoothly

by Scott Gordon

Achieving computer security can seem like a major task these days. Fortunately, following these few simple steps can provide a good measure of security.

Antivirus Software:
New definition files that are used to detect and repair viruses are typically released daily. You should ensure your virus software is registered and updates are applied regularly. Most antivirus software can be configured to do this automatically.

Windows & Office Updates:
Windows & Office vulnerabilities are being discovered regularly. Critical and security updates should be applied at least monthly to ensure your computer software is up to date. Viruses continue to exploit old vulnerabilities because many users do not apply patches regularly. Remember, if a worm gets on your system because you failed to apply the proper patches, every email address on your system may become the worm's next target.

Firewall:
No Internet connection is safe without a firewall. Firewalls are necessary regardless of what type of internet connection you are using. In a matter of seconds, a worm can infect your computer.

Instant Messenger:
When someone sends you a URL link in an instant message, you should exercise extreme caution before clicking the link. A number of worms take over a computer and send out instant messages with a link to the worm to everyone listed on the buddy list. Instant Messaging is becoming a more frequent target of worms.

Virus Hoaxes:
Don't fall victim to virus hoaxes. These hoaxes spread needless alarm and may even tell you to delete perfectly legitimate files that will cause your system not to startup next time you reboot if deleted. Be sure to verify information relating to viruses BEFORE forwarding on those dire sounding emails warning of non-existent viruses.
